Fishing Report - May 28, 2011

   Our fishing has been hit and miss this last week. One day it's good and the next it is tough. Tarpon and redfish still being the best targets.  The water clarity is still poor on the higher tides with your best bet on the either side of the low for sight fishing.

   We are seeing a few large snook coming in from the Gulf on the hunt for food in the backwaters. They are few and far between but this is the time of the year to take a big fish on the fly. One of the fish we spotted last week still had a remora attached to its side.  Glass minnows, pilchards and finger mullet are plentiful in most of the bays and shorelines.

   Yesterday was a spectacular morning in the 10,000 Islands with the huge cumulus clouds over the Gulf at sunrise and the distant sound of thunder. A reminder of summer approaching.  Ed Evans and I poled across a small bay at first light on our hunt for tarpon. We found a few rolling fish on our first stop but not consistent. We ran further south and found a about a half dozen nice fish, a few shots but no takers. By noon the water was high and pretty much shut things down until later in the afternoon when we found a few reds in very skinny water.
